UCLA Jab Drill!!!
The jab is the FOUNDATION...
UCLA JAB DRILL
I was blessed with the opportunity to conduct a dodging clinic at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) for their D1 team and one of the BIG concepts in terms of footwork and dodging we worked on was having a STRONG JAB.
Here is the breakdown of what we worked on. You can do this on a line, or with cones.
The schematic I created works off of cones, since most will work this at home, and finishes with a shot.
JAB STEP DRILL
4 Rounds / 20 seconds
Start by chopping your feet at a moderate pace, cradle, and add in every couple of seconds a explosive jab step across the line.
You can also set up two cones to accomplish this drill.
Reference chart
Also, you can place a goal at the end and work in some shooting as well.
OR
4 sets each leg 5 reps each
THINGS TO FOCUS ON
Change of height
Start high and change levels to a low athletic position
Change of speed
Chop your feet at a moderate pace and then explode into your jab
Weight shift
Shift your weight to your jab to “load” it and then transfer the weight back to your center to begin run again
Misdirection
Look in the direction you are not going
